Festivals and Events in Kuwait

Festival of Eid

In Kuwait, majority of the population are followers of Islam. Therefore, Eid is an important religious festival in Kuwait, and it is marked as a national holiday. Eid, also referred to as 'Eid ul fitr', is celebrated over the successful completion of the month of Ramadan.

On the eve of Eid, Muslims stare at the sky to catch a glimpse of the new moon, which is believed to bring in happiness and prosperity. There is another festival, called Eid Al Adha, a festival of sacrifice, held on 10th day of Dhual Hijiah, the twelfth or pilgrimage month.

Eid is a festival that spreads the message of peace and love to the whole world. Muslims pray together and embrace each other religiously, greeting each other a Happy Eid. On the day of Eid, men offer special Eid Namaaz early in the morning in the mosques. Eid lasts for three to four days, during which, Kuwaitis put on their new clothes, visit friends and relatives, and greet each other with gifts. Another interesting aspect of Eid in Kuwait is the traditional and delicious sweet served, called Sewain.

Eid Al Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadan, and it is basically a day to eat, drink and make merry. Children await the arrival of the festival with excitement, as they look forward to receive ‘Eidiah’, the money given as gift to children by elders. People even throw parties at their home on Eid, friends and relatives get together and celebrate in a grand manner, while others go out to restaurants for dining.

There are also exhibitions such as the Ramadan and Eid Exhibition, the household consumables & home supplies industry trade fair, being held during this season, wherein visitors get to explore the best consumable products including gift articles, flowers, handicrafts, flowers, florist’s requisites, toys, games, paper, office materials, stationery, pictures and frames, perfumery, cosmetics, living and design, drugstore goods, jewellery, costumes, hobby, and souvenirs.

This year's Ramadan & Eid Exhibition is scheduled is scheduled to be held from 11th August 2011 to 20th August 2011 at the Kuwait International Fair Grounds in Mishref, Kuwait.
