Kuwait may achieve herd immunity against coronavirus by next September

13 May 2021

Kuwait may achieve herd immunity against Covid-19 by next September when the total number of those receiving the vaccines will hit the 3 million mark.

As per media reports, achieving this rate will put the country at the threshold of obtaining herd immunity, which will pave way for return to normalcy wit 65 to 70 percent vaccinated before the new school year starts in September.

Kuwait expects that the number of those vaccinated may reach 2 million in next few weeks. More than 60,000 workers at Mosques, cooperatives, food factories, banking sector and cinemas have already been vaccinated against Covid-19.

According to sources if all workers at restaurants, catering companies who are registered for vaccination, get their shots during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, it will clear the way for complete resumption of businesses after Eid.

The 13th May being the first day of Eid, Kuwait lifted partial curfew that was imposed on 7th March due to a surge in coronavirus cases. The checkpoints were removed from the streets in the country due to the end of curfew.

During this week, the daily rate of infection in Kuwait dipped to below 1000 mark for the first time since February.

Kuwait began mass vaccination against Covid-19 in December. Last month Kuwait launched mobile vaccination units targeting workers in Mosques and in various commercial activities having direct contacts with general public, with an aim to accelerate inoculation.
