Kuwait bans travel of unvaccinated residents

06 May 2021

The Kuwait government has banned unvaccinated residents rom travelling abroad starting this month. This initiative is aimed at controlling the growing coronavirus outbreak in the nation.

This Cabinet decision will get effective on 22nd May. The decision has, however, sparked instant anger and confusion, given, the confirmation by the health authorities on global vaccine supply shortages, which has compelled them to delay distribution of second vaccine doses.

People who have received the first dose of Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine have to wait for six weeks before taking their second, and the recipients of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine should wait 3 to 4 months.

The government further said that those unable to get vaccination for any specific reason would be exempted from the new travel ban.

The authorities have already banned entry of expats into Kuwait, and several foreign workers and their families have been stranded abroad.

Kuwait has been grappling with a surge in virus cases despite its strong vaccination campaign and tough restrictions, including prolonged night curfew.

So far, Kuwait has recorded more than 277,800 infections and 1590 deaths.
