Kuwait’s education authorities are considering laying off 600 stranded expat teachers, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

Those teachers specialise in subjects where there are surplus staff inside Kuwait, Al Jardia newspaper said.

They include teachers of computer, decoration and Islamic education – subjects that can be taught by local hires from Kuwaitis and other Gulf nationals.

The Education Ministry will seek advice from the state Civil Service Commission on the status of the teachers that it wants to terminate their services to arrange for paying out their financial entitlements likely to be reimbursed through the Kuwaiti embassies in their respective home countries.

The education sector has finalised compiling lists of the 600 teachers and their names to be replaced with local hires, the newspaper reported.
