Kuwaitis account for over 95 per cent of employees in the Ministry of Electricity and Water amid a vigorous campaign in the country to replace foreign workers with citizens to redress a demographic balance, media reports said today.

Foreigners account for nearly 3.4 million of Kuwait’s 4.8 million population. There have been increasing calls in Kuwait to redress the population imbalance in the country, prompting several government bodies to disclose plans to cut numbers of their expatriate employees.

Nominated by the state Civil Service Commission, Some 1,218 Kuwaitis were appointed at the ministry last year. According to figures published by Al-Rai daily, MEW has 23,042 employees, of which 21,956 or 95.3 percent were Kuwaitis, and only 1086 are non-Kuwaiti employees.

Following efforts to redress a demographic imbalance, 95 per cent of Kuwaiti citizens are now employed in the in the Ministry of Electricity and Water jobs.
