Around 190,000 expatriates have entered Kuwait in the past two months despite government's effort to redress demographic imbalance, a prominent Kuwaiti lawmaker has said.
MP Safa Al Hashem said in her twitter account, “It is unfair that a country boasting a lot of rich potential and promising opportunities, but all its services have become dilapidated.”
In recent months, there have been increasing calls in Kuwait for curbing foreigners’ employment amid accusations that migrant workers have strained the country’s infrastructure facilities.
While Kuwait has for years been slowly replacing public-sector expatriates with nationals, the coronavirus has accelerated its efforts. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for later this year, and anti-expat rhetoric is attractive to some voters, especially when it concerns lucrative government jobs.
