Private school operators in Kuwait seek end of current academic year

19 March 2020

The private school operators in Kuwait have requested the education ministry in the country to conclude the current academic school year as quickly as possible, as parents have expressed concerns over their children attending classes amidst the coronavirus scare.

In their letter to the Kuwait Cabinet through Education Minister Saud Al-Harbi, the Chairman of Kuwait Union of Private Schools, Omar Al-Ghurair also sought for compensation for private school owners for any financial loss if parents do not pay the remaining fees.

If the government agreed to the request, any money received would be used to pay salaries, rent and other expenses, they said. The private school operators urged the Kuwaiti government to accredit first semester results as the final results for the year 2019-20 and ease the pressure, taking into account the safety and health of teach and administrative staff who still had to report to work.

The union said that schools may resume on 29th March, or if the suspension was extended until mid-April, it may prolong the school year increasing power consumption and negatively affect next year’s academic schedules. The private school operators were also not in favour of e-learning alternatives as students were not completely trained to use the system, and there was lack of student-teacher interaction and no clear assessment and follow-up strategy.
