Kuwait begins issuing work permits to stranded expat workers

19 November 2020

According to sources from the Public Authority for Manpower, work permits are now issued to stranded expatriate workers so as to permit them to return to Kuwait.

However, the former MP and First Constituency candidate Saleh Ashour has strongly criticized the decision by the government to allow issuance of work permits for expat workers stranded abroad, particularly the Egyptians and Syrians.

He further said that such a decision flouts the recently-ratified law regarding addressing the lopsided demographic structure issue, warning that the government will be subjected to intensive questioning soon.

According to sources, this initiative is inline with the decision by the Health Committee formed by the Cabinet to allow employers to send the list of needed expat workers who have been stuck abroad. This list will be sent to the Interior Ministry to obtain security approval.

Once the approval is obtained, the employers will have to submit a request to PAM for issuance of overseas work permit for stranded workers.

The employers will authorize the issued documents, then send them to expat workers to complete the necessary procedures in their respective countries. With this decision, the eight-month suspension caused by closure of Kuwait International Airport owing to coronavirus crisis comes to an end.
