Kuwait to re-tender multi-billion airport project

Kuwait has announced plans that it may re-tender a multibillion dollar project to build a second terminal at its airport, and the new tender may include separate packages.

The public works ministry has established a committee to monitor the project, and has shortlisted three options. The recommendations would be made on 10th January.

According to a government source, one option is to re-tender the project, which has been delayed several times already.

The option involves new terms, including diving the project into individual packages for private sector contractors, while the implementation of infrastructure and other major construction works would be left to the government, owing to their high costs.

The two other options and the reason behind the re-tender is yet to be known. Reports say that Limak Holding of Turkey has already submitted the lowest bid of $4.76bn from the 18 pre-qualified bidders list, which also include CSCEC, Arabtec Construction based in Abu Dhabi and Astaldi Spa of Italy.

The new terminal will boost airport handling capacity of Kuwait from its current passenger capacity of nearly 8 million to 25 million.
