Skyscraper developers conceal the height of their building to remain atop
The increasing competition among international real estate companies for building skyscrapers has compelled the companies to place a lid on their ventures to stay ahead in the race. Often real estate companies are seen hiding information about the exact height of their skyscraper until the project nears completion, so that competitors will not be tempted to attempt a better or higher one.
However, although currently it is the West that is retaining the lead, the first skyscraper built during the year 1885 was not built in the New York, but, in the Yemeni Shibam City, an ancient treasure which was declared as a World Heritage City in 1986. The City, with its history dating back to the 14th century BC, has its first skyscraper in history. The dense walled maze comprising five-hundred mud-brick skyscrapers, ofcourse, do not compete with the skyscrapers of today, but are considered to be amazing architectural wonder, taking into consideration the building techniques, tools and technology available at that time.
The buildings in shibam range from 20 to 40 meters in height, and have seven to sixteen storeys. While a few of the skyscrapers are made from traditionally baked mud and hay bricks, the others are more than 800 years old. The Skyscrapers apart from serving security and military purposes were also used to accommodate large number of people in the area.
Today, however, the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Canada are famous for their skyscrapers. The largest numbers of skyscrapers are in Hong Kong, with 39 in number, each more than 200meters in height. Hong Kong also houses 15 highest buildings in the world.
Other Cities throughout the world are fast catching up such as UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, which are witnessing urban and architectural boom. The Liberation Tower in Kuwait, which was completed in 1996, is about 372 meters high. The tower has been the recipient of several international prizes, and is the tenth highest tower in the world which is used for the purpose of tourism and wireless communication. The height of the skyscrapers is not measured by including the communication antennas, but upto the highest occupied floor. However, due to secrecy involved in the construction of towers, nobody gets to know the final height of the skyscraper until completion.
