Kuwait records decline in expat count
Nearly 45,000 expatriate workers have left Kuwait this year, while the new work permits issued have touched 90,000 in number, revealed Mohammad Al-Kandari, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour.
The Ministry has taken several measures over the years to reduce population of foreign workers from 2million to 1.2million. The population of nationals rose from 31percent to 34 percent, while the number of new work permits for nationals fell from 179,000 in 2007 to 72,000 in 2008, Al-Kandari pointed out.
This drop in work permits among nationals may be due to measures taken by the Ministry to restrict issuing new work permits to expatriates with the skills required by local labour market.
Al-Kandari also hopes that the problem of shortage of staff in various labour departments may be settled shortly, as the Ministry has asked the Civil Service Commission to find ways to encourage nationals to work in labour and social care sectors.
