Expert warns architects to apply caution when designing for coastal regions
According to a researcher at the Coasts and Pollution Department of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, the designers of the buildings and facilities, adjacent to the beach, should bear in mind that sea waves can be enormous and quite harmful, although rarely.
Dr. Karem Rakha, who spoke to the media, said that such an eventuality should be taken into consideration when designing the ports, power stations and other projects in coastal regions of Kuwait.
There should be no flaws in the designing so as to avert any regretful incidents in future as such ventures could also be costly.
The department uses measurement devices at 19 stations in Kuwait and in 38 other Arab nations, monitoring the course of waves, he said.
According to the studies by the Institute, the average height of the wave in Kuwaiti waters ranges between 1.9mn to 4.0m, apart from 7 meters in other locations of water of the Gulf. The space of Arab Gulf is 226,000 square kilometers, with a length of 1000 kms and width of 200 to 300 kms.
Average depth of the Gulf is 45m and the deepest spot reaches 110m. But the depth at Hormuz is measured at 130m, while in the nearby Oman Sea, it touched as deep as 900m.
