The City of Silk
The glamour of mega-projects in Dubai is also spreading to other GCC countries. Kuwait too is planning an ambitious project The City of Silk, which will include tallest towers in the world, as its main attraction.
The Madinat Al-Hareer or The City of Silk, will cover 200kms in size, and is more than just a development opportunity for its investors. The City aims to honor the history and culture of Arabian architecture, emphasizing on family.
Spread across 200 square kilometers in size, the city will bring about 3,00,000 jobs and will be home to about 7,50,000 people. The land area will house a wildlife sanctuary, which would be one of the largest in the entire region.
The ‘City of Silk’ drew inspiration from the Belfast in Northern Ireland, a city which had suffered sectarian violence during earlier times, which resulted in division of the area. The government then turn the reclaimed land, known as Queens Island, where Titanic was built, into a new community.
The project, which was worth £1bn, received the go-ahead from the British Government last year, and is likely to create jobs for 20,000, apart from offering residential and commercial space, which was one a Wolf shipyard and derelict Harland. The place created an opportunity to draw about 5,00,000 tourists a year.
The City of Silk, however, is a far larger project, and instead of using North American or European models to design the city, it has been planned to use Islamic culture and ethos to give a more traditional Arabic feel.
The plans have been approved by the government in November, and initial plans for development of the project are now under discussion. The work will happen in several phases, and will be complete by 2030.
New communities will be brought in each year, with the bridge connecting ht eBay and City of Commerce and the Kuwait City. The city will be located adjacent to the new airport, opposite to Kuwait City.
“I want the City of Silk to be known as ‘Garden City’. Garden Cities earlier used to be only the province of super rich and the monarchies. To me, the democratic city creates access to those luxuries for everybody,” said Eric Kunhe, Managing Director, Eric Kuhne & Associates.
