Kuwaiti government blamed for undue delay in delivering homes
Citizens in Kuwait are enraged with the Kuwaiti government due to the undue delay in building of houses, which each male citizen is entitled to upon marriage, and are now clamoring for the same.
The wait is so long that it is no longer something that we can depend on during the early years of marriage. It is now accurate to call them retirement houses, -said a Kuwaiti citizen, who has been on the wait for eleven years for a government house, after marriage.
About 76,800 applicants are currently awaiting housing. Last year, the average wait for a government house has been sixteen years, leaving couples without a house for most part of their married lives. In 2007, only 1,826 government homes were completed, an increase over the figures 475 in 2005, and zero in 2006. About 8000 new applications are received each year, with irregular state completion, touching a record of 10,555 houses being built in 2001 to zero houses built in 1996, 2004, and 2006.
Kuwaitis are very baffled and frustrated with the irregular production rates. Most Kuwaitis point out to the more than KD6billion budgetary surplus, as an easy answer to their housing woes. If utilized to build government homes, the sixteen year wait for housing could end in a flash, but, the government has earmarked the money for other projects, while the citizens are made to wait, commented a citizen.
The Kuwaiti government has promised a house to every married male citizen, and the Kuwaiti constitution states that family is the cornerstone of society, and the law requires the government to preserve its integrity, strengthen ties and protect it.
Recently it has been reported that the Public Authority for Housing Care is ready to contract construction companies to build 56,625 government houses and the surrounding infrastructure. However, going by the present track record of the government, one has no option, but to wait and watch, says enraged citizens.
