Bahrain, Kuwait may see lowest pay hikes in Gulf this year

Some of the lowest pay hikes in the Gulf nations this year will be in Bahrain and Kuwait, while Qatar is likely to offer the highest average pay hikes, said an expert in recruitment industry.

The MENA Regional Practice Leader, Financial and Professional Services at Stanton Chase, Shane Phillips, mentioned that three nations, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman will see employees taking home more this year.

Salaries in Oman is already 20percent below the average salaries in KSA, UAE and Qatar, and therefore will have to offer better salaries if they intend to hire qualified people. Meanwhile, the lowest pay hikes will be in Kuwait and Bahrain, as these two nations continue to struggle on their way forward.

The experts at the leading portal Bayt.com said that Qatar ranks the highest in GCC in terms of salaries. Average personal income is higher in Qatar in the GCC region, while it is Lebanon in the Levant, and Morocco in North Africa, said Amer Zureikat, VP Sales at Bayt.com.

However, there are experts who are of the opinion that pay hikes will not be limited to any particular country or sector, and will be more on case basis and specific individuals.

According to Konstantina Sakellariou, Partner, Marketing & Operations Director at Stanton Chase, there is no tendency in the region, country or sector for salary decreases. This will be largely dependent on the performance of a specific company and the specific individual. Similarly, with the exception of remuneration offered to nationals in governmental sectors, there will be no massive hikes in salaries, and will be again based on performance of the company and of specific person.

As for the most promising sectors that are likely to hire, the expert said that banking and finance, telecommunications, and constructions are the top sectors that will hire and retain talent.

Mostly, commerce graduates / post graduates are likely to be hired, with 23 percent of organizations across the MENA region, having agreed to employ staff in this field. Even graduates / post graduates in business management and computer science sectors are equally sought after.

Nearly 31 percent of employees in the GCC are of the opinion that they will begin recruitment within a year’s time, as against just 26percent of employers in Levant and North Africa.
