Recruitment of domestic workers to get tougher in Kuwait
The GCC nations are considering imposing of stringent regulations on recruitment of domestic workers. The GCC nations are almost approving a proposal which agrees on specific nations from which domestic labourers, particularly housemaids, can be hired, so as to avoid any problems in the domestic labour sector.
Based on the recently-concluded conference in Geneva, which involved participation of Ministry of Interior, and Social Affairs and Labour in Kuwait, it was noted that the ministries are working towards addressing the issues pointed out by International Labour Organization (ILO), which criticized the manner in which housemaids are being treated in Kuwait. The ILO also pointed out increasing suicidal rates among housemaids in Kuwait during the past five years.
The concerned authorities in Kuwait are laying out a plan to end the suffering of domestic workers and impose harsh penalties on sponsors violating their rights.
Kuwait prefers housemaids from African nations, while all other GCC nations are also considering hiring from Nepal for the first time. The concerned departments will exchange data with Kuwait embassies to facilitate issue of visas in line with necessary security requirements and policies.
