Kuwait Labour Ministry re-works on labour issues
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MSAL) plans to implement specific regulations shortly, on issues pertaining to labour and expatriate workers. This is in order to improve the international image on human rights issue by Kuwait.
The Ministry is currently studying the implementation of laws to assess the offenses that were committed then, and prevent them from repeating in future.
The Cabinet has been emphasizing promotion of establishment of exclusive residential areas for bachelor labourers, while ensuring that security is maintained there.
This supervision will offer necessary info to grant police officers an easy access in case rioting occurs. The Ministry held combined studies with the Interior and Public Works Ministries to review the recommendations made by the Kuwait Municipality on most suitable locations that could be converted into labourers’ areas, including Al Shaddadiya and Subhan. Meanwhile, contracts are being signed to offer the cities all necessary infrastructure and sewage facilities.
The Ministry is also currently following up necessary action on the issue of sponsorship, as it is keen on finding the best possible mechanism to replace it, similar to the regulation wherein workers with atleast three years of service in a single job are permitted to transfer their residence permits without prior permission from original employers.
The Ministry is also heavily dependent on recently enforced public labour law, containing several regulations supporting human rights in Kuwait, such as minimum wages and improvement of living conditions of expatriate workers.
