Kuwait records lowest unemployment rate
About 14mn or more Arab nationals, have remained jobless during end of 2008, despite unemployment drives by few countries, and surge in most regional economies during the second oil boom, shows official data.
Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE are not facing much unemployment issues, although the other Gulf oil producers did face unemployment issues to a certain extent.
The figures by a Cairo-based Arab Labour Organization (ALO) indicated that Arab League nations suffer from high unemployment rates that exceed 30 percent in Djbouti, Mauritania and Somalia.
Towards end of 2008, the total number of unemployed Arab nationals touched 14.005mn, constituting 14.37%, said ALO.
Kuwait recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 1.33 percent, while Qatar and UAE recorded 2.4percent and 3.12 percent respectively.
The rate of unemployment at other Gulf nations stood at 5.63percent in Saudi Arabia, 6.7percent in Oman, and 4% in Bahrain.
Outside the GCC, the Arab nations with mild unemployment rates were Syria at 8.42 percent, Egypt at 9.04 and Morocco at 9.6 percent.
Countries such as Djibouti, Somalia, Mauritania, Palestine, Yemen, Libya, Iraq and Sudan recorded 35.24%, 34.7%. 33.2%, 21.5%.18.46%, 18.15%, 17.5%, and 17.3% respectively.
Unemployment rate was also comparatively high in Lebanon at 15%, Tunisia at 14.1percent, Jordan at 12.7% and Algeria at 13.8%.
Egypt has maximum number of jobless people, followed by Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Morocco and Yemen.
