Kuwait to stop recruitment of expatriates in public sector
The government in Kuwait is likely to shortly stop recruitment of expatriates in the public sector, reveals a local Kuwaiti daily.
Such a measure aims to control expenditure and offer better employment prospects to Kuwaitis, aiming to join the public sector in the State.
The Kuwait Parliamentary Information and Research Committee last month called for changes to public sector employment legislation and suggested that about 60,000 expatriates working in the public sector could be replaced by Kuwaiti nationals.
As per the media reports, henceforth the Kuwaiti government will only employ expatriates with rare speciality skills and will adhere to its new policy of substituting Kuwaitis with expatriates at the rate of 10 percent annually.
Meanwhile, in the private sector too, the government has decided to offer training to minimum of 3000 Kuwaitis who could replace expatriates working in management, information and communication sectors.
The Parliament Committee report confirms that the number of unemployed nationals climbed to 5.9percent of the Kuwaiti population, constituting a total of 20,000 people.
Just as in other GCC countries, Kuwait recently pushed for replacement of expatriates in several sectors. With the worry about steady rise in unemployment among young Kuwaitis, and being wary of potential social and security issues about the presence of millions of expatriates on their soil, the Gulf nations are gradually considering new legislations and taking initiatives to curb the number of expatriates.
