Decline in unemployment rate in Kuwait
In its latest GCC brief, the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) reported its latest statistics from the Public Authority for Civil Information (PACI), wherein it showed that the total population in Kuwait now stood at 3.44mn at the end of June 2009, more or less unchanged from end of 2008.
About more than 1.10 million (32 percent) are Kuwaiti nationals, while 2.34 million are expatriates. The employment figures for Kuwaitis do not reflect the general slowdown in economic activity during the past 18 months, mainly due to the structure of the labour force and stability in public sector employment, the drop in expatriate employment does reflect a change. The employment level in Kuwait stood at 2.04million in June 2009, declining by 13,000 at an annualized rate of 2.6 percent during first half of 2009. The entire drop in employment was mainly attributed to expatriate segment. Indeed the number of employed Kuwaitis actually increased by 10,000, while the fall in total employment came from private sector. But, the employment in public sector actually increased.
However, a positive sign noticed for the first time was that the newly employed Kuwaitis overwhelmingly went into the private sector, with the law calling for equal benefits in private sector as that of public sector. The data also showed further rise in share of Kuwaiti females in local employment.
The number of unemployed Kuwaitis touched 14,265 in June 2009, making up an unemployment rate of 4.2 percent of the Kuwaiti labour force. However, this is still lesser than that recorded at the end of 2008 (4.9 percent).
Kuwait government is still under pressure to offer new jobs for nationals.
