Indonesia bans domestic labour recruitment to Kuwait
The Indonesia Labour Ministry has temporarily banned deployment of Indonesian housemaids to Kuwait. The decision was implemented in Jakarta by the Indonesian Ministry of Labour, until the issues of about 600 runaway housemaids are resolved.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Bahrain and Kuwait, Faisal Ismail, who spoke to the media, mentioned that such a decision was taken for better welfare of Indonesian workers.
He continued that the Ministry of Labour in Jakarta had implemented the order in mid-September. There are about 600 runaway housemaids at the Indonesian embassy at present. There are several issues that need to be resolved, and until their concerns are resolved, the government will have to temporarily suspend deployment.
According to Ismail, Kuwait will have to come up with more improvements in the welfare of the workers, if the order has to be scrapped. It has something to do with the improvement in treatment and conditions provided to the workers.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has also announced complete termination of their previous co-operation with the Kuwait Union for Domestic Labour Offices (KUDLO), as their problems were not settled by KUDLO. Several local recruitment agencies too accused KUDLO for monopolizing the Indonesia domestic labour market. KUDLO represents 13 recruitment agencies against more than 400 other agencies not associated with KUDLO.
There are about 80,000 Indonesians in Kuwait, out of which, 60,000 are domestic labourers.
