Expelling expatriates from jobs is no solution for economic crisis

The act of removing expatriate workers from their jobs and sending them back to their home countries is not the practical solution to address the problem of global economic crisis, opinioned Shahil Haque, the IOM representative for Middle East.

IOM, which was established in 1951, is a migration agency, which believes in the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits the migrants and society.

Shahil made the statement during the launch of the four-day conference titled “Enhancing Management of Temporary Foreign Labour in Kuwait”, held at Costa Del Sol until 19th February. The conference also involved the participation of Jamal Al-Dosari and Mohammed Al-Kandari, the Undersecretaries of Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour in Kuwait.

The foreign workers’ can be considered an important part of the solution. They in-fact, may help revert the crisis, by creating new wealth or creating new business opportunities.

Shahil, in fact, recommended focusing on new innovative business initiatives, economic activities, in which both skilled and un-skilled workers may turn productive.

According to Shahil, global players cannot remain mum in the global transformation and its effect on rights of human migration.

“We need to be pro-active in promoting and realizing the idea of safe mobility as an opportunity for all,” he added.

Even the United Nations Resident Co-ordinator in Kuwait, Valerie Cliff, who also spoke during the Conference, said that just as in any other nation, Kuwait too should make efforts to offer suitable job opportunities.
