New Labour Law believed to lack job security
The Secretary for Information and Cultural Affairs in Kuwait Trade Union Federation (KTUF), Awadh Shaqeer Al-Mutairi, alleged that the new Labour Law does not guarantee job security, and that it does not prevent the random termination of employees in private sector.
The federation suggested 30 amendments in the law, but only two to three were approved, he said, adding that, these amendments pertained to leaves, penalties, and job contracts against employees, in addition to freedom of labour unions. The aim is to provide job security to workers, he noted.
According to Al-Mutairi, the new law is no different from the old one. He alleged that the government has been focusing on the suggestions by international organizations, which is not practically applicable in Kuwait.
He further lamented that the new law encourages privatization and is intended to push more national manpower into private sector.
“However, KTUF is against privatization of any major sectors in the country, as few people supporting privatization are doing so for their own personal benefits and are, not concerned about its consequences,” he added.
Al-Mutairi has called on the MPs to study the new labour law and protect the rights of national manpower.
