Private Sectors accused for planning to lay-off Kuwaiti employees
Few private sectors and banks and investment companies have been planning to lay off several Kuwaiti employees, citing the global recession as reason. The government is requested to intervene and save Kuwaiti employees, as it was the government which saved several financial institutions from going bankrupt at the time of economic crisis - said Khalid Al-Tahous, the Chairperson, Kuwait Labour Union Engineer.
According to Tahous, several local private sector employers, including investment companies and banks are taking steps to terminate the contracts of Kuwaiti workers, and that the Board of Directors of several private sector companies has already taken steps to layoff Kuwaiti employees.
The union is in co-ordination with these institutions to prevent layoffs. But few forces within the system are trying to get rid of Kuwaiti employees. However, the labour union will resist any such moves or decisions, said Al-Tahous. He urged the Parliament to ensure the approval of the proposed Labour Act, which is being listed in the agenda of next session.
“I hope all the lawmakers will stand by Kuwaiti workers to protect their rights, as told in the International Labour Law. The private sector mafia should not be allowed to snatch the rights of Kuwaiti workers,” he concluded.
