Issuance of work permits to continue
According to Undersecretary Mohammed Al-Kandari, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour has not yet stopped issuing work permits. So far, about 75,000 work permits have been issued by the Ministry. The work permits are issued to all nationalities.
The Ministry has also started transferring labourers from one sector to another, irrespective of their time spent with the previous sponsor. Even domestic servants are being permitted to transfer to private sector. All these attempts are done to stabilize the labour market, and provide non-working labourers with sponsors, offering them an opportunity to transfer their residence to their current employer.
In the meanwhile, several labour departments at the ministry will stop processing transactions from mid-December till beginning of January 2009 to calculate the percentage of expatriate manpower in the country.
The Ministry will suspend the issuance and transfer of work permits during this period, but, it will renew residence permits and will issue final clearance for those intending to leave the country for good. The calculation work will last for two weeks.
