Transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits proposed in Kuwait
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour has urged the General Immigration Department to permit transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits in the private sector.
Explaining details of conditions for the transfer, the sources revealed that the applicants need to be academic degree holders, prior approval from department by employers, and proof of need for additional manpower.
The Ministry, together with the department, has come up with a mechanism to regulate issuance of visit visas to certain nationalities, causing trouble to the country.
In the meanwhile, a representative of International Labour Organization (ILO) in Kuwait, Thabet Al-Haroon said that the sponsorship system is an outdated practice that needs to be eliminated as quickly as possible, as it can cause more harm to the country.
Cancellation of sponsorship system would help in better organizing and developing of the labour market, and will help achieve national, economic and social targets, in addition to increasing productivity of private sector, he explained.
While few people are of the opinion that sponsorship system is tarnishing the country’s reputation in both regional and international market, others are comparing it to slavery. Hence a serious decision is required in getting the new labour law ratified at the earliest, the official pointed out.
