New recruitment system proposed in Kuwait

A senior official at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has proposed the establishment of a new recruitment system, hoping that it would help remove Kuwait from the list of countries accused of human trafficking, while also regulating the domestic labour market.

The new system is likely to involve formation of a government shareholding company, responsible for bringing domestic workers to the country, receiving them at the airport, and offering intensive one-week training course. During the training course, which would be offered in their own languages, they would be briefed about their duties, responsibilities and about the customs and traditions of Kuwaiti Society.

During this period, the workers would undergo various immigration procedures, and health checks so as to ensure their wellbeing before continuing to work with their sponsors.

The company would be responsible for accommodation of newly arrived workers, and will be in-charge of taking care of the workers whom the sponsors intend to send back home after ensuring that the workers are being provided the plane ticket by their sponsors, so as to reduce financial burden, which otherwise the embassies are compelled to shoulder.

The company will also receive and study complaints about workers from individuals and embassies in order to reduce the pressure currently put on the Interior Ministry over these issues.

The company would be a public sector corporation and 51 percent of the shares would be owned by the government and 49 percent would be sold to the recruitment agencies of domestic workers.
