GCC likely to trim entry of marginal foreign labour
According to the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour in Kuwait, Bader Fahad Al-Duwalia, there is a mainstream tendency in the GCC to trim marginal foreign labour in the region.
Larger number of expatriate workforce puts the GCC at risk, undermining the economic, demographic and social structures, Al-Duwalia said, when speaking during the 25th meeting of GCC Ministers Social and Labour Affairs.
The GCC needs to adopt a new approach towards foreign labour, taking into account the social, economic, and political and security aspects in the region, he pointed out.
Handling the issue of marginal foreign labour is a national duty of the GCC ministries of social affairs and labour. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour in Kuwait has already developed a strategy for dealing with this challenging issue, Al-Duwalia said.
The Director General of the Executive Office of the Council of Ministers of Social Affairs and Labour of GCC, Salem Al-Meheri, revealed that the meeting discussed about the national action plans for employment of domestic labour in the region.
The GCC members are eager to create more jobs to their citizens in the region. The executive office has decided to intimate the GCC Ministries of Social Affairs and Labour about the draft plan on regulation of employment of foreign labour in the region. It has already established a joint committee to study the ideal guidelines about importing expatriate worker, Al-Meheri said.
