Kuwait sets minimum wage for unskilled workers
The Kuwaiti Cabinet has yesterday set a minimum monthly wage of KD40 for unskilled workers (mostly cleaners) and KD70 for security guards. This is the first time ever, that Kuwait has established a minimum wage for workers. The non-complying companies have been warned of stern action.
The decision was taken based on recommendations by Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Bader Al-Duwailah, who came after demonstrations last week by thousands of Bangladeshi workers demanding better pay and unpaid salaries.
The decision is however, applicable only to workers who are employed by companies on government contracts. Several thousands of foreign cleaners and security guards are working for government-contracted companies, and they would surely be benefited by the new measure. For instance, the Bangladeshi workers who staged demonstrations last week revealed that although they signed contracts for monthly salary of KD40, they were paid only half the amount.
The State Minister for Cabinet Affairs, Faisal Al-Hajji, has warned that companies failing to abide by the decision will have to face stern penalties which include freezing their recruitment files, and referring them to court for legal action. By doing so, these companies will not be able to hire new laborers from local or from abroad. Hajji reiterated that the decision will be strictly applicable to all companies with government contracts.
