Work permits to be suspended until further notice
Social Affairs and Labour Minister, Bader Al-Duwaila, has announced that suspension in issuance of work permits is likely to continue until further notice. The Ministry will begin issuing the permit only after a new plan has been announced, which guarantees even distribution in the labour market.
The Minister is in the process of carrying out a detailed survey about the labour situation in Kuwait and the number of work permits granted to companies. This will enable the ministry in coming up with a clear strategy of avoiding the current drawbacks faced by the local market.
This was mentioned with reference to the recent events that sparked the labour strikes due to non-payment of salaries. The Ministry will now issue an official decision regarding extending the suspension period until concrete results are reached. The ministry also formed joint committees with Interior Ministry to study all issues in the labour market.
This will focus on labour problems prevalent in certain companies and the manner in which the rights of both employers and workers can be safeguarded at the same time.
The officials in the Labour Ministry revealed that the Ministry will begin disbursing payments to all labourers who went on strike for not receiving their salaries in full or part till date. The payments were made through the deposits paid by companies through bank guarantees to the Ministry.
The Ministry will ensure that the pending salaries are settled even it requires disbursing the payments through government coffers in the event that insurance companies cannot guarantee the payments. The officials at the ministry agreed that at this point of time, it was vital for the ministry to get over the striking phase and seek for effective and permanent solutions.
