New law for domestic workers in Kuwait
The Ministry of Interior in Kuwait has announced that beginning 1st July, domestic workers will be permitted to transfer their residency only after one year of completion.
The Chairman of Al-Huqooq International Company, Hashem Majed, who spoke to Arab Times on Monday, said that the new measure does not fare well for domestic workers and they are likely to face exploitation at the hands of unscrupulous sponsors.
Majed, however added that the new law will help in restricting visa trafficking and pointed out that the government has taken efforts to curb this practice. The domestic workers will now take refuge at their respective embassies in view of exploitation, and the embassies may have to stretch their facilities.
When abiding by the new law, a domestic worker will have to continue working for his/her sponsor even if they face harassment from their sponsor, due to which problems are likely to crop up, he added.
Al-Huqooq has been instrumental in protecting rights of domestic helpers and has helped in repatriating numerous stranded workers in Kuwait, apart from getting them their dues.
