Kuwait, India signs common contract for unskilled workers
Kuwait and India have signed deal to adopt a common contract for the unskilled worker category in private sectors.
The Indian embassy in Kuwait has resumed attestation of work contracts, revealed an official at the Indian Embassy.
He added that the dispute pertaining to domestic labor contract still remains unresolved.
The Kuwait Embassy and Consulate in India had resumed stamping visas, even though several hundreds of jobseekers were left stranded due to the impasse that began in December 2007.
The dispute, which began from the side of India, added a few fresh terms that involved both domestic and private sectors in the labor contract. This move was rejected by Kuwait, claiming that the contract model should abide by the labor norms.
The sticking points that were pointed out in the domestic contract were the demand by India to limit the working hours of domestic help to eight hours, and anything beyond that to be taken as overtime. The contract also stated that the sponsor will have to provide the maid with a telephone, just after her arrival in the country.
Kuwait and India had signed a landmark labor pact last year, which aimed at facilitating recruitment of manpower, apart from safeguarding rights of workers coming to Kuwait.
