Sponsorship system likely to be erased in Kuwait
According to international labour officials, Kuwait is seriously considering an alternative to sponsor system, which could turn out to be a new state policy.
A spokesperson from the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Kuwait, reported that the current sponsorship system in Kuwait is being criticized, as it is an old system prevailing since the 1980s, and the country is now taking serious steps to scrap this system.
The Undersecretary of Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in Kuwait, Mohammad Al Kandari, said that the Ministry has begun to consider the procedure involved in scrapping the sponsor system, and this old system may be ended within fifteen months. He said the new system will be formed in a manner so as to meet international requirements.
Pointing to this statement, the spokesperson said, this comes as a ‘good news’, and revealed that the organization has already presented an alternative system to the government, which would safeguard the rights of employers as well as employees.
“A system based on contracts, rather than sponsorship, is what the organization is looking for,” he said.
