Salary-hike proposal in Kuwait considered as justified
Economic figures revealed that the call made by HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to increase salaries was justified. They said the increase in salaries should be done on basis of precise factors such as the price hikes and inflation, and their impact on the state budget and private sector.
Ali Al-Moussa, Former Planning Minister, said that citizens have the right to demand salary increase, but, this should be done only through proper means, that do not threaten the state interests.
He said, Kuwait is not the only country that needs an increase in income due to rise in oil prices, but all 41 countries too need such a benefit. However, he pointed out that Kuwait is the only country that witnesses strikes of employees in vital sectors.
The Former Trade Minister and Chairman of Kuwait International Bank, Abdulwahab Al-Wazzan, said that Kuwait salary hikes require a thorough assessment, and stressed that the call will achieve justice without escalating inflation or without affecting the state budget in a negative manner.
Former Finance Undersecretary, Abdulmohsin Al-Hunaif, said that the aspiration of Kuwait in becoming a trade and financial center requires careful consideration of increase in salaries. The World Bank can provide Kuwait with necessary data and experiences of other countries to learn from, before the state’s authorities take their final decision.
