Fewer Kuwaiti nationals employed in private sector jobs
Kuwait is working towards employing more qualified Kuwaitis in private sector. The rate of unemployment in Kuwait is soaring, while the public sector is over employed. To add to this scenario, fresh Kuwaiti graduates, unable to get suitable job opportunities in the government sector, are waiting for years awaiting a public sector opening.
It is a known fact that Kuwaitis prefer working in public sector due to high pay-scales and lighter job-pressure, as against in private sector, which demands more productivity. However, during the last couple of years, Kuwaitis have begun applying for private sector jobs, rather than awaiting public sector jobs for long time. But, only few of them succeed while doing so, while others do not.
The Kuwaitization Law that the Kuwaiti Government issued for local unemployment problem two years ago was a good solution. This law fixed a mandatory percentage of Kuwaitis to be employed in a company, with the percentage differing based on the position, as for key position, it even touched 100 percent.
The Manpower and Government Restructuring Program (MGRP), a special institute, established by the government for training young Kuwaitis for their career, offering nine months of training in various sectors and fields, was another solution for solving this problem. The students trained by this institute are mostly employed in private companies.
However, a few trainees sent by MGRP are also getting problematic, reveal certain companies. Al-Zahim of Kuwait Industries Union commented “The first time few Kuwaiti graduates from MGRP came to work with us, they demanded two days off, which was not allowed here. So we paid them their salaries and decided that it was better that they stay at home, rather than spoil our work culture.”
Al-Zahim also revealed that certain other factors such as the Kuwaiti Government competing with private sectors, by announcing government vacancies every few months, are other reasons behind private sector’s lack of success in employing Kuwaiti nationals.
