Located at Farwaniyah in Kuwait, the Kuwait International Airport is situated 15.5kms south of Kuwait City. It serves as a hub for both Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways.

A particular portion of the airport complex has been designated as Al Mubarak Air Base, which also accommodates the Kuwait Air Force headquarters and the Kuwait Air Force Museum.

The airport was under massive renovation and expansion from 1999-2001, during which, the former parking lot was cleared and a terminal expansion was built. This includes new check-in areas, construction of a multi-storey parking structure, new entrance to the airport, and an airport mall.

The Kuwait International Airport handles more than seven million passengers a year. A new general aviation terminal, which was completed in 2008, was modified to handle scheduled services of Wataniya Airways along with general aviation traffic. The terminal was re-named as Sheikh Saad Terminal.

Further, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has announced that construction of a new terminal is underway, and aims to handle about twenty million passengers annually. It is due for completion by 2014.

Among the noteworthy passenger services feature available at the airport are the KD18mn expansion of the first phase of the passenger terminal, which includes spacious new commercial centre, close to the Arrival Hall, and wide range of car parking amenities. The second phase includes 64 new fully-automated check-in positions, state-of-the-art baggage handling systems, and a Kids’ Zone.

These new amenities at the Kuwait International Airport has enabled handling of more than 100 flights a day during the peak summer time, with the airport being ranked as one of the world’s best for on-time performance and operational efficiency. The compact size of the airport, coupled with simple layout and excellent signage makes it more user-friendly, and therefore much loved by travellers.
