Domestic Workers Bill may regulate their hiring process

The Health, Social Affairs and Labour Committee completed its report on Domestic Workers Bill.

During a press statement following the panel meet, Committee Rapporteur Sadoun Hammad Al-Otaibi, revealed that the bill includes 73 articles. He further said that most prominent feature of the bill is to regulate the process of bringing domestic workers into Kuwait, and is aimed at decreasing the period of service to one year (from the present two years), before allowing transfer from one sponsor to another.

He further said that the bill stipulates fine upto KD10,000 and imprisonment for not more than five years. He further said that there is another proposal to establish joint stock companies for recruiting domestic workers.

However, it is said that there are disagreements going on about reducing period of transfer to another sponsor, as it contradicts certain stipulations of international conventions on workers’ rights, said MP Kamel al-Awadi.
