Kuwait embarks on national railway system project

Kuwait will begin its initial steps to work on the national railway system, which form part of the plan to make the system fully operational by end of 2018, a Kuwaiti official revealed.

Speaking on the side-lines of a workshop regarding GCC railway project, the Ministry of Communications Executive in Kuwait, Abdulhadi Al-Marri said that the Kuwaiti national railway system will be linked to the overall GCC railway project, aimed at improving transportation in the region.

The GCC nations, including Kuwait, are vigorously working on measures to bring the railway project to life, as part of regional plan established by Gulf leaders. The project was well-ahead planning-wise, especially with standard specifications being approved in 2012.

The GCC railway system on completion, will link various cities in the region, with the proposed starting and ending points being Kuwait City and Muscat.

The railway system will cover a distance of 2,117 kilometers, and will be used to transport people and transfer goods, and would have various economic, commercial and social benefits.
