Kuwait International Airport marks steady growth in passenger numbers

The one and only civil airport in Kuwait, namely, the Kuwait International Airport, has grown steadily in recent years, with the national carrier Kuwait Airways, trying to become a global hub carrier.

The passenger numbers have more than doubled between 2003 and 2012, and last year, the traffic growth was 5.6 percent suggesting that the airport could break the 10million passenger mark this year for the first time.

Last week saw the arrival of the latest airline of the airport, the Cebu Pacific Air, a Phillippine carrier, which launched thrice-weekly flights from Manila on 2nd September, with the first service from Kuwait taking place the following day.

At more than 7,600kms, this is the airport’s third longest non-stop service, only after United Airlines service from Washington Dulles and Kuwait Airways service to Newyork JFK.

Kuwait Airways currently serves around 30 destinations non-stop from its home airport. The only destination served at present, which was not served last September is Lahore, to where services were launched in April. Among the destinations served include Europe, Frankfurt, London Heathrow and Rome, apart from Asian destinations like Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka and Indian Airports of Delhi, Chennai, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

A total of 41 airlines now operate scheduled services to Kuwait. Apart from Cebu Pacific, other new carriers at the airport over the past one year are Pegasus Airpliens, Nile Air, Atlasjet, with seat capacity across all airlines being more than 8 percent in comparison to last September.
