Kuwait to tender multi-billion metro rail project in five-year plan

Kuwait will tender the much-delayed USD multi-billion metro rail project in its five-year development plan, revealed Hind Al Sabeeh, the Minister of state for development and planning.

Other major projects to be included in the 2014-18 plan are, the Mubarak Port, the media city, privatization of schools, university and co-operatives.

The next development plan would include tendering of large projects in Kuwait like the Metro and rail projects, she said.

The government is planning to launch the new development plan after the first development blueprint is complete.

The new plan involves various solutions to tackle imbalances in the previous plan, including delay in implementation of major projects, she added.

The new plan would focus on private sector and encourage foreign capital. The first plan involved investment of about KD30bn by the public and private sectors.

Officials earlier said that 171km metro project would cost about USD7bn and would form part of USD25bn rail network linking Kuwait with its five partners in the GCC (Saudi, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and UAE). The Metro project was already due for launch in 2013, but has been delayed due to internal reasons.
