Demolition of Amghara Scrap Yard in progress

The demolition of makeshift structures has been in progress at the Amghara Scrap Yard, a place which was formerly considered as haven for used spare parts for any car brand.

The old scrap yard was given notice to transfer years back, and an ultimatum was issued on 15th April to relocate from Amghara to a new location at Naayeem near Salmi border.

Majority of the businesses were against transfer, but, the decision was made, and the new area is under development. The Public Authority for Industry (PAI) said that notices and instructions to all businesses were issued several years back. Also, public parks, recreational facilities, etc., have been already planned by the Public Authority for Housing Welfare for the former scrap yard.

Located about 110km from Kuwait City, the new scrap yard seems quite far and you may need a whole day to complete your tasks. Another option is to consider Shuwaikh. Even before the transfer, majority of the spare parts in Amghara were also available in Shuwaikh.

But, they are expensive in comparison to Amghara. With the Amghara scrap yard now finally transferred, the price of some spare parts has increased. Also, now there will be increase in prices in Shuwaikh too, as the new area is quite far, said a spare parts dealer.

The relocation forms part of the development project being implemented in accordance with the directives of HH the Amir, aimed at transforming Kuwait into a commercial and financial centre. There have been several other plans too, which include complete relocation of the entire Shuwaikh Industrial Area to a new location and clearing Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh.
