India to extend Visa-on-arrival and ETA facility to 180 countries

India has announced plans to issue visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorization (ETA) for nationals of all countries, except eight prior reference countries including Iran, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and China.

ETA will permit foreign travellers to apply for visa from home, and obtain online confirmed in five working days.

The visa-on-arrival facility will be extended to tourists from 180 countries. However, it may take 5 to 6 months to put the infrastructure in place, said Rajiv Shukla, the Planning Ministry.

Visa-on-arrival and ETA will be initially implemented at nine airports in India including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Cohin, Hyderabad, Goa and Trivandrum.

At present, India extends visa-on-arrival facility to tourists from 11 countries only.

This new initiative is aimed at boosting tourism sector.
