Sharp increase in house rentals

Kuwait saw a sharp increase in housing rents this year, says latest statistics.

The law stipulates that landlord can raise the rentals once every five years, and any increase other than this is illegal. At times, tenants are unaware of their legal rights and so they agree to pay higher rents every after a year or two.

Few other tenants, on the other hand, experienced rent hikes this year too, most of them after five years without an increase, but no so for others. Although this increase is illegal, they agreed to pay for various reasons.

Majority of the tenants explained that they agreed for the increase, as the increase was less than 10 percent, and they could not find cheaper accommodation, and also to avoid the hassles of shifting process.

However, more and more people are complaining of increase in housing rents this year. The rentals have shot up in a short three-year time span. Expats have complained that they are unable to lead a comfortable life with such a ridiculous increase, which takes up a large chunk of their salary.
