Education department seeks exemption from new public sector retirement rules

The cabinet in Kuwait has rejected an appeal from the Education Minister, Nayef Al-Hajraf to exempt senior educators from new retirement rules.

As per the new decisions during the last cabinet weekly meet, senior government officials are required to retire immediately on completing 30 years in office, while staff members spend 35 years in office, and will automatically lose opportunity to be promoted to senior posts.

Minister Al-Hajraf made attempts to exclude senior MOE officials from the mandatory retirement clause, but, no avail.

A source from the ministry said that the decision comes at a bad time in which the Ministry of Education has already begun implementing its education improvement strategy.

Once implemented, the new stipulations are like to shake up the MOE’s leadership hierarchy, as recently appointed Undersecretary Mariyam al-Wutaid, Undersecretary Assistant for Public Education, Mohammad al-Kandari and several other ministry officials and school administrators will be affected.

The new stipulations form a part of government efforts to tackle the growing unemployment rate, which has touched 4.9percent in Kuwait, the country which considers employment as constitutional right of nationals.

According to Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah, there are 19400 nationals waiting for jobs in the public sector.

The Ministry has also implemented new promotion system that require employees to take up a training course and pass a written examination and an interview when seeking promotion to supervisory posts.
