Travel ban on Kuwait nationals and expats, now effective

About 100,000 nationals and expatriates in Kuwait will be banned from leaving the country, effective today.

Such a decision has been arrived at, due to their non-payment of fines pertaining to traffic, commerce or municipality offences.

The Justice Ministry introduced automatic travel bank, in co-operation with the Interior Ministry, to recover unpaid fines worth about 11 million dinars. As per the new rules, a defaulter, whether a Kuwaiti national or a foreigner, cannot travel until the fine is paid.

The defaulter will be granted a one-year grace period to pay the fine and have the ban lifted. However, failure to do so could lead to imprisonment.

The sources in the Ministry have appealed to defaulters to avoid the travel ban and a possible imprisonment by paying the due fines. The ban will be lifted immediately on payment of fine at the airport, or at the Interior Ministry services centres. But, if the fine payment is made through Justice Ministry, the ban will be lifted only the next day.
