Two week suspension of work permits, transfer applications likely

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour will temporarily suspend the issuance of work permits and processing of transfer applications for two weeks, as per the Article 11 of Labour Law in the private sector, sources in the Ministry said.

According to sources, the Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs, Jamal Al-Dousari, will shortly issue a circular on the suspension of the procedures by mid-December.

Sources said that the Ministry is taking this initiative as part of its administrative works, in the interest of labour sector in general. This will give the Ministry sufficient time to have inventory of work permits, transfer applications, visa cancellations and actual number of Kuwaitis and expatriates working in the private sector, in its database.

Sources further said that the officials will verify the number of inspections carried out in companies, establishments and other related institutions.

According to sources, the Ministry will continue processing work permits for the first-time applicants, and renewal of these permits and final cancellation for travel.

The sources disclosed that the decision will affect the activities of the committee in-charge of work permit-related procedures, the applications for work visa transfers, commercial visit visas to work permits, and approval to work in government projects and other exempted sectors.

Sources asserted that the flow of work at the Ministry will return to normalcy by the beginning of 2013.
