Kuwait aims to be a zero-plastic nation by 2020

Kuwait aims to be a zero-plastic nation by the year 2020, the Environment Public Authority (EPA) revealed. Apart from gradual switchover to use paper or bio-degradable shopping bags, the EPA Chairman, Salah Al-Midhi said that new types of bags will be used for bread and bakery products, and for grocery and other shopping.

By the year 2014, items such as table spreads, plastic dry cleaning bags and plastic sheets used in construction and agricultural activity will be modified.

From the year 2015, import of non-biodegradable plastic bags will be banned, and all state bodies may have to co-operate to reach the ultimate goal of this campaign, which is a no-consumer product, made with non-bio-degradable plastic by 2020.

The EPA is working on promoting and introducing materials that are added to render plastic biodegradable. Such materials will be exempted from customs fee and penalties will be introduced to meet the realization of this target, Midhi said.

Kuwait, being a small country, the issue of plastic is of particular concern. It cannot afford to waste valuable space for waste dumps. The pollution caused by disposal and treatment of such waste is also of concern for the population, he said.

The new bags are cheaper and soil and environment-friendly, which is an added advantage.
