Kuwait International Airport to handle 13mn passengers by 2016

Kuwait International Airport aims to handle 13 million passengers by 2016, with the number of passengers passing through the airport having touched 703,000 in May, marking 11percent growth year-on-year.

The official data also revealed that the total number of flights to and from the airport has increased seven percent, while the total number of air freight handled has grown 3 percent, to 17 million Kg.

The growth comes following the announcement in December that construction work on the expanded KD900mn airport terminal will be ready by fourth quarter of 2016.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, the design for the terminal, which is aimed at more than doubling the annual passenger capacity, will be finalized this year. The design will have a trefoil plan, with three wings of departure gates, with each facade spanning 1.2km. Plans are also on to build a metro, linking the airport to the city centre.

The current airport in Kuwait has a capacity to accommodate 5.69mn passengers a year, and 46,930 aircrafts. The expansion planned will increase passenger capacity to 13mn a year, and further development will increase capacity to 50mn a year.
