Five-year validity for expat work permits recommended

The Ministry of Interior has demanded that expatriate labour forces be granted the opportunity of issuing work permits, with maximum five-year validity, so that it can help curb visa trafficking, apart from easing pressure on labour and migration department.

A recent report, quoting a letter sent by Gen. Director of Migration General Department, Maj. Gen. Kamil Al-Awadhi, to Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, pointed out that the maximum date for work permit in private sector be raised from three to five years.

Kuwait’s Residency Laws stipulate that migration department and MSAL should co-ordinate procedures, involving the issuance of work permits to private sector expat employees. The letter is considered as an effort by the Interior Ministry to establish co-ordination with MSAL, hoping to increase the duration of work permits.

Although the MSAL has been following the same procedures for years now, it is vital to take note of the fact that changes have taken place, particularly with regard to growth in expat labour forces, which may subsequently lead to increased transactions and procedures at both labour and migration departments, the letter said.
