Kuwait-Iraq flight services restored after 22 years

The first passenger plane from Kuwait to Iraq touched Najaf Airport this week, after 22 years following the Kuwaiti invasion and deterioration of relations between the two nations in 1991.

The Airbus 320, by Jazeera Airways, landed at 6:00pm, carrying the ambassadors of two countries on board. The low-budget airline will begin operating two flights a week, henceforth, between the two neighbouring nations.

This initiative comes following the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki last month to Kuwait, to resolve the two decade long disputes between the two nations.

The Prime Minsiter had agreed with Kuwait authorities on 14th March to pay US$500mn in debts to Kuwait. According to the deal, Iraq will pay US$300mn to Kuwait in cash, while the rest will be invested in the Iraqi-Kuwait airline, in return for Kuwait ending its legal actions again.
